Speech and music are two unique human forms of communication. How do they connect to each other? Are they processed similarly or differently in our brains? Can music influence speech acquisition and benefit individuals with speech and language disorders? At the Montreal Speech Music Lab, we investigate how speech and music work together to shape language, communication and human connection. Rhythm and timing are at the heart of our research, exploring how rhythm helps to connect the body and the mind in both verbal and musical communication. 

Bringing together researchers from phonetics, experimental linguistics, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, as well as speech therapy and music, our research moves between the laboratory and everyday life to better understand and ultimately support the ways people communicate and connect.
