PhD Students
Mengwan Xu (she/her/elle)
Ph.D. in Linguistics (Language Neuroscience)
Mengwan is interested in the relationship between language and motor control, integrating cross-linguistic analyses. Her doctoral project aims to investigate the connection between language comprehension and the rhythmic nature of walking. She also seeks to explore how the structure of linguistic expressions may influence neural and kinesiological responses during walking in speakers of different languages. Outside of research, Mengwan loves diving into a good book, tending to her flowers, and spending time with her dogs and cats..
Current Project Title: Dynamics of motor rhythms and syntax: embodied cognition of locomotion across syntactically diverse languages
Musical Instrument / Singing: Guzheng (Chinese zither)
Claudie Gagnon (she/her/elle)
Doctorate in Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology Option (D.Psy.)
Claudie’s research interests focus on cognitive development, particularly language development in young children, both in clinical and non-clinical populations. Claudie loves staying active and was a competitive swimmer for eight years.

Chantal-Valerie Lee
Ph.D. in Linguistics
Chantal is passionate about exploring the intersection of interdisciplinary studies, particularly speech disorders and artificial intelligence (AI). Using AI, she is also interested in studying the role of rhythm in sensorimotor synchronization during speech perception and production in children who stutter. Her goal is to create AI technologies that contribute to innovative solutions for individuals with speech disorders in the future. Chantal is the Editor-in-Chief of CEREBELLUM, a student-run science communication journal from the CRBLM (Centre for Research on Brain, Language and Music). For more information: https://crblm.ca/journal/

Nadège Fournier (she/her/elle)
Ph.D. in Linguistics
Nadège is interested in the connections between language, society, and the brain. Her doctoral research focuses on the sociocognitive processes underlying second dialect acquisition—that is, learning another geographical variety of one’s first language. Eating maple syrup crêpes, rock climbing, and speaking German make her very happy.

Mona Frank (she/her/elle)
Ph.D. in Linguistics
Mona is interested in the role of rhythm in the interplay between speech perception and production, as well as its neural correlates. She is also pursuing a Ph.D. in phonetics at LMU in Munich, Germany. And she is a passionate baker.
Current Project Title: Les corrélats neuronaux et physiologiques du rythme linguistique
Co-supervised by: Philip Hoole, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany
Catherine Chevalier
Ph.D. in Linguistics
After several years of working as a speech-language pathologist with children and adolescents, I decided to deepen my understanding of (a)typical syntax acquisition in school-aged French-speaking children. More specifically, I am interested in the development of the syntax-semantics interface—that is, the interaction between sentence structure and meaning. As part of my Ph.D., I study quantification and interrogatives in French-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD). One of my goals is to use my research findings to enhance assessment and intervention techniques in speech-language pathology. I have a passion for all things vintage and old school: old vinyl records, vintage bicycles, old photographs… and handwritten letters!
Current Project Title: Discontinuité syntaxique et trouble développemental du langage
Co-supervised by: Mireille Tremblay

Ph.D. in Psychology, Research and Intervention, Clinical Neuropsychology Option (R/I)
Catherine is interested in everything that connects neurocognition and music. Through her doctoral project, she is currently focusing on the relationship between singing, speech, and psychosocial well-being. Catherine practiced ballet for seven years and was also part of a musical theatre troupe in 2019.
